Who is Oliver Sykes?

Oliver Sykes is an English musician, singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. He is best known as the lead vocalist of the rock band Bring Me The Horizon.

Early Life

Oliver Sykes was born on 20 November 1986, in Ashford, Kent, England. At a young age, he moved to Australia with his parents and lived in Adelaide and then Perth.

When Oli became 8 years old, he moved to the United Kingdom and settled in “Stocksbridge in Sheffield, South Yorkshire” with his family.

Oliver Sykes has been suffering from night terrors called Sleep Paralysis which is a state where you can’t move or speak while falling asleep or after waking up. He has been suffering from sleep paralysis since the age of 12.

Sykes became a vegetarian in 2003 after watching a documentary on Animal Cruelty. He was 16 years old at that time.

Sykes is an atheist and he openly admits it saying I don’t believe in God. I was asked to believe in him when I was in a shitty place. I couldn’t understand why I needed a god or, in my opinion, something that doesn’t exist.”

Major Life Events

In late 2000, Oli was still in school but he had developed a musical interest. He attended his first-ever concert which was a performance by Linkin Park.

Afterward, he started crafting compilation CDs and short tracks under the name Quakebeat.

It might come as a surprise for many of the fans, But Oli’s first band was called Womb 2 Da Tomb which was a mock hip-hop band. Along with Oli, the band consisted of his brother Tom Sykes and fellow Bring Me The Horizon member Matt Nicholls.

His second band was called Purple Curto which is a metal band. The band consisted of “Cider” (Neil Whiteley) on guitar and bass and Oliver Sykes on Vocals and Drums under the pseudonym “Olisaurus”.

Later, Oli used the pseudonym “Olisaurus” to release some solo materials.

In 2004, Oli founded Bring Me The Horizon which consisted of Matt Nicholls (drums), Curtis Ward (Rhythm Guitar), Matt Kean (Bass), Lee Malia (Guitar) & Oli (Vocals).

in 2009, Curtis ward left the band and was replaced by Jona Weinhofen. Then In 2012, Jordan Fish joined the band as a Keyboardist.

After a year, Jona left the band. Currently, the band consists of Matt Nicholls (drums), Matt Kean (Bass), Lee Malia (Guitar), Jordan Fish (Keyboard Instrument) & Oliver Sykes Vocals.

Albums

  • Bring Me The Horizon released their debut album Count Your Blessings in 2006.
  • On 29 September 2008, the band released its second studio album Suicide Season.
  • The third studio album “There Is a Hell Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is a Heaven Let’s Keep It a Secret.”  was released on 4 October 2010.
  • The band released their fourth studio album Sempiternal on 1 April 2013.
  • Fifth studio album That’s the Spirit was released on 11 September 2015.
  • Their sixth studio album Amo was released on 25 January 2019.

Collaborations

Oliver Sykes has collaborated with many people for musical as well as non-musical projects. We will share some of the exciting collaborations.

Sykes has been featured in You Me At Six‘s song Bite My Tongue, Architects’ “Even If You Win, You’re Still a Rat”, Admiral’s Arms’ “Dawn of the New Age” and Deez Nuts’ “If You Don’t Know, You Know Now”.

One of the most exciting collaborations was Sykes being featured as guest vocalist with an English metalcore band While She Sleeps. On the song, his fans really enjoyed the screams that weren’t heard on his songs for a long time.

The internet really exploded when Oliver was featured in the music video for Charli XCX’s song Boys. The song also featured artists such as Brendon Urie, Charlie Puth, Stormzy & Denzel Curry.

Furthermore, Sykes also collaborated with DJ Skrillex as the backing vocals for the Bring Me The Horizon’s song Visions. He and his band have also collaborated with Lights, Canadian singer-songwriter and musician for the song “Don’t Go”.

On 27 October 2017, Sykes performed with Linkin Park to perform at Linkin Park and Friends: Celebrate Life in Honor of Chester Bennington.
